Travelling to Austria

It’s never been easier or faster to get to Austria, whether at the height of the delightful summer or in the midst of the enchanting Alpine winter. Right at the heart of Europe, Austria’s transport links are second to none. And it’s easy to get to the hotel from the airport or station with transfers organised by your hotel – in some cases for free.

By air:

Austrian largest cities can be reached easily by air, not least Vienna with flights from around the world and with connections to every corner of the country. Austrian Airlines and other local carriers can get you to Graz, Linz, Innsbruck, Klagenfurt or Salzburg, and Altenrhein, just over the border in Switzerland. Many budget carriers now fly from European countries to Klagenfurt, and to Ljubljana (just over the border from Carinthia in Slovenia), creating more flights than ever before. Transfers from the airport are easy with bus, shuttle or taxi – the hotels will help with the arrangements.

By car:

Fast, well-maintained motorways head in to Austria from all directions. Border checkpoints are open 24 hours. An excellent internal motorway, highway and federal road network makes it simple to get around, despite the huge mountains which try to get in the way. Motorway and federal-road check points are open day and night. Motorways and highways are subject to toll – a Vignette can be bought at most petrol stations and at border entry points.

By coach:

A very cost effective way to get to Austria from most European main cities. It is also fast and very reliable.

By train:

Travel throughout Europe is well organised and is one of the main means to get to Austria. Easy connections all over the continent mean it is easy to get here from Britain and the northern countries as well as from central Europe. Austrian rail (OEBB) has a network covering big cities and the most unlikely villages. And not only do you benefit from travelling along stunning valleys, skirting placid lakes and through historic cities, you also know you’re doing your bit for the environment.

By boat:

Despite being land-locked, Austria has various connections from neighbouring countries, such as the service from Budapest to Vienna (which you could link up with to make your holiday even more exciting).
